Global Patterns of Earwig Species Richness

چکیده

One of the most investigated patterns in species diversity is so-called latitudinal gradient, that is, a decrease richness from equator to poles. However, few studies this pattern insects at global scale because insufficient taxonomic and biogeographical information. Using estimates earwig country level, their gradient was modelled globally for two hemispheres separately after correcting differences areas. Separate analyses were also conducted mainland island countries. All clearly indicated existence gradients. The plausible explanation observed tropical conservatism hypothesis, which postulates (1) origin many extant clades, (2) longer time cladogenesis environments thanks environmental stability, (3) limited ability historically lineages adapt temperate climates. Earwigs probably evolved on Gondwana secondarily colonized Northern Hemisphere. This colonization hampered by both geographical climatic factors. Himalayan orogenesis obstructed dispersal into Palearctic region. Additionally, preferences warm/hot humid climates regions. Pleistocene glaciation further contributed reducing northern latitudes.

Global patterns of diversification and species richness in amphibians.

Geographic patterns of species richness ultimately arise through the processes of speciation, extinction, and dispersal, but relatively few studies consider evolutionary and biogeographic processes in explaining these diversity patterns. One explanation for high tropical species richness is that many species-rich clades originated in tropical regions and spread to temperate regions infrequently...

Climatic drivers of hemispheric asymmetry in global patterns of ant species richness.

Although many taxa show a latitudinal gradient in richness, the relationship between latitude and species richness is often asymmetrical between the northern and southern hemispheres. Here we examine the latitudinal pattern of species richness across 1003 local ant assemblages. We find latitudinal asymmetry, with southern hemisphere sites being more diverse than northern hemisphere sites. Most ...

Quantifying island isolation – insights from global patterns of insular plant species richness

Isolation is a driving factor of species richness and other island community attributes. Most empirical studies have investigated the effect of isolation measured as distance to the nearest continent. Here we expanded this perspective by comparing the explanatory power of seventeen isolation metrics in sixty-eight variations for vascular plant species richness on 453 islands worldwide. Our obje...

Could temperature and water availability drive elevational species richness patterns? A global case study for bats

Aim A global meta-analysis was used to elucidate a mechanistic understanding of elevational species richness patterns of bats by examining both regional and local climatic factors, spatial constraints, sampling and interpolation. Based on these results, I propose the first climatic model for elevational gradients in species richness, and test it using preliminary bat data for two previously une...
